Unnerving floating heads in hazy yellow convenience store.

Ever feel like a game you’re *really* excited about is stuck in development forever? Like, you keep hearing about it, seeing cool snippets, but the full experience feels just out of reach? That’s been the story with *Ultrakill* and its layers of Hell for a while now. But good news, speedrunners and demon-slayers: the wait for the eighth layer, ‘Fraud,’ is almost over. New Blood, the team behind this incredibly stylish FPS, is telling us to prepare to skip school and call in sick – it’s happening, and they’re not kidding. Let me translate this hype for you.

When is the Ultrakill Fraud Layer Releasing?

The exact date hasn’t been nailed down yet, but New Blood is strongly hinting at a release *next week*. They’re leaning into the excitement with that “skip school/call out sick” messaging, which suggests it’s coming sooner rather than later. Originally planned for late 2025, the release was pushed forward, which is a fantastic surprise for fans. Keep an eye on New Blood’s social channels for the official announcement. And, importantly, the launch will coincide with their anniversary sale from February 23 through March 2, so you might snag a deal!

What *is* Ultrakill, Anyway?

Okay, let’s back up for a second. *Ultrakill* is a fast-paced, ultra-violent first-person shooter that’s been in Early Access for a few years now. It’s developed by New Blood Interactive, a small team known for their love of classic “boomer shooters” like *Doom* and *Quake*. But *Ultrakill* isn’t just a retro throwback; it adds a ton of modern mechanics and a unique visual style. The core gameplay loop revolves around building up a ‘Style Meter’ by performing skillful kills – think dodges, parries, and quick weapon swaps. The higher your Style, the more powerful you become, and the more stylish the action gets. It’s all about aggressive, in-your-face combat.

What Makes Ultrakill Different?

Several things. First, the movement is incredibly fluid and responsive. You can dash, wall-run, and slide around arenas with ease, making every encounter feel dynamic. Second, the weapon variety is fantastic. You start with basic weapons, but as you progress, you unlock a whole arsenal of over-the-top tools of destruction, each with its own unique feel and purpose. But perhaps the most defining feature is the game’s structure: you’re fighting your way through layers of Hell, each with a distinct aesthetic and challenges. This brings us to two key *Ultrakill* concepts: V1 Machines and Blood Debt.

V1 Machines: These are the robotic husks you inhabit in *Ultrakill*. They don’t have health in the traditional sense. Instead, they operate on ‘Blood Debt.’
Blood Debt: You gain Blood Debt by taking damage. To stay alive, you need to constantly kill enemies to *pay off* that debt. If your Blood Debt remains unpaid for too long, your V1 Machine shuts down. It’s a unique risk/reward system that encourages aggressive play.

What’s Special About the ‘Fraud’ Layer?

Each layer of Hell in *Ultrakill* has its own distinct visual theme and gameplay mechanics. Lust is a neon-drenched city, Gluttony is… well, a giant stomach, and Greed is a golden desert filled with monuments to human excess. Fraud, based on what we’ve seen, seems to be all about illusion and deception. Expect funhouse mirrors, shifting environments, and physics-bending puzzles. The trailer shows a lot of distorted geometry and unsettling imagery, suggesting that this layer will mess with your perception. It looks like a real departure from the previous layers, and a very exciting one at that.

What’s Next for New Blood?

*Ultrakill* is the closest of New Blood’s three Early Access projects – *Ultrakill*, *Gloomwood*, and *Fallen Aces* – to a full 1.0 release. After Fraud, only ‘Treachery’ remains as the final layer of Hell to conquer. Beyond that, they’re also working on *Dungeons of Dusk*, a grid-based dungeon crawler inspired by *Grimrock*. New Blood is proving to be a force in the indie scene, consistently delivering ambitious and innovative games. I’ve been consistently impressed by the depth and complexity they’re adding to each project. It reminds me of that feeling you got with *Elden Ring* in 2022, where you kept discovering new areas and secrets long after you thought the game was over.

Should You Buy Ultrakill Now?

At $25, *Ultrakill* is already a great value, especially considering the amount of content available. However, if you’re on the fence, waiting for the Fraud layer to launch during the anniversary sale (February 23 – March 2) is a smart move. You’ll get the newest content *and* potentially save some money. Either way, if you’re a fan of fast-paced FPS action and unique game design, *Ultrakill* is definitely worth checking out.

🗳️ After reading this, how well do you understand what makes *Ultrakill* special?

  • A. I’m a demon-slaying expert now!
  • B. I get the gist of it, but still have questions.
  • C. I’m still lost in the layers of Hell.
